You got a tonneau cover to protect your stuff, but let’s face it, not all covers are fully waterproof. Rain, snow, and even dirt can find their way into your truck bed if it isn’t sealed right. While many covers offer some water resistance, you’ll often need to add a little extra to make it truly waterproof. Let’s go over some simple tips to make sure your tonneau cover actually keeps the bed dry.

Step-by-Step Guide to Waterproofing Your Tonneau Cover

These steps can help with most types of covers, whether you’re trying to improve an old tonneau or set up a new one for wet weather.

    1. Clean and Inspect the Cover

Before you start, make sure your cover is clean. Dirt, dust, or debris can interfere with the seals you’re about to apply, making them less effective. Use a simple soap and water mix, but avoid harsh cleaners that can damage the cover material. Wipe it dry and check for any damage like small tears or worn spots that might need repair.

    2. Apply Weatherstripping Around Edges

Weatherstripping is a simple way to close gaps between the tonneau cover and the truck bed. You can find foam weatherstrips at most hardware stores. These are easy to install and stick right onto the frame. Make sure to apply them evenly along the sides and the tailgate, as this is where most water will seep in. Press down firmly to ensure it’s well-secured, and don’t forget the corners, which are usually weak points for leaks.

    3. Use a Water-Resistant Spray

Some waterproofing sprays are designed to add a water-resistant coating on your cover. These sprays can work on both soft and hard covers, making the surface repel water rather than soak it up. Follow the directions on the spray, usually requiring an even coat across the surface. This step can be especially useful for soft covers, which are more prone to letting water through the fabric.

    4. Install Tailgate Seals

The tailgate is one of the main areas where water sneaks in, so don’t skip this part. A tailgate seal kit will help close gaps between the cover and tailgate. These kits are often made of rubber and can be easily applied with adhesive backing. Place the seal along the top and sides of the tailgate for full coverage.

    5. Check the Hinges and Seams

With hard folding covers or retractable covers, the hinges and seams need attention, as these are common weak points. Apply a layer of silicone-based sealant around any visible gaps in these areas to help keep water out. Silicone is flexible and waterproof, making it ideal for these spots.

    6. Use Drainage Tubes

Some covers come with a built-in drainage system that you can attach to drain tubes, guiding water away from the truck bed. If your cover has these, make sure they’re clear of debris and functioning well. You can add a drainage kit if your tonneau cover doesn’t have one, helping move water away before it pools.

What to Expect from Waterproofing a Tonneau Cover

While waterproofing helps, it may not make a tonneau cover 100% waterproof. Covers often vary in material and design, so some may be better at keeping water out than others. If you follow these steps, though, you can significantly improve the cover’s performance in wet weather.
