Wear and tear is a common thing in tonneau covers even when handled with care as most of them are made of a soft material called vinyl.
When they are not taken care of properly, they tend to dry up, developing tears and cracks easily. The only option left with you is to use a leather and vinyl repair kit and fix the tear.
The patchwork might hamper the look of the tonneau cover, but it will prevent further damage. Mentioned below are the steps of repair:
- Step 1
Clean the area of the tear on the cover so that no dust or dirt that will hamper the working of the repair chemical agent. The best way to clean is to use soap and water and then swab the place with alcohol.
- Step 2
Use a razor blade, a scalpel, or even scissors for trimming the rough edges from the torn area. You can lay the torn site flat on any surface.
- Step 3
In the vinyl and leather repair kit, you will find canvas cloth backing. Insert this piece between the vinyl and the canvas; you might need to apply glue. For effective sealing, press them together. You can use a pressing iron or other equipment for firmer sealing.
- Step 4
Mix the pigments in the repair kit so that the color blends with that of the truck bed cover as closely as possible.
Carry out the mixing with a filter from the repair kit. Now fill the tear with the filler material in the kit. Apply in thin layers many times instead of applying a single thick layer.
Finally, press the embossing stamp. You will see that the color of the truck bed cover and the final layer of the filter material are almost identical.
